Creative Machine Embroidery Courses
I run courses from my studio in Norwich, and am also available for hire to work with Embroiderers, Quilting Guilds and Private Textile groups.
There are two options for the groups above. I can give evening talks which normally last for an hour on " My 25 year journey through creative machine embroidery". I bring along embroidery samples and publications from over the years and talk through my journey along the way with it's various ups and downs! To compliment this I can run 1 -3 day creative machine embroidery workshops to the guilds.
I have space for a maximum of six sewers to come and visit me to learn how to freemotion machine embroider. I work with a small number of students so that I can concentrate on teaching each individual at their own level. You will need basic knowledge of your sewing machine which I encourage you to bring your own with you so that you can familiarise yourself with it when working freemotion. It will need to be adapted to free motion machining, so be able to drop the feed dogs and use a spring loaded Quiling/Darning foot.
On the first day I will run through the basics of machine embroidery and get you set up on your machine ready to ’draw in sewing’. You will need to bring along your own sewing machine, although not crucial as I have a couple spare, along with your sewing box with threads, pins, scissors etc.* You will also need to make sure that your sewing machine can be converted to ’Free motion machining’ by using a darning foot and lowering the feed dogs *I will provide the fabric that you will be using during the initial sampling stage. I will run through exercises on machine tension, working with various threads, working with mixed fabrics, appliqué techniques, and preparation of fabrics for your final piece.
This is where the fun begins! Armed with the knowledge of the previous days sampling, this day is all about self development. The aim is to leave with a finished piece of embroidery that reflects your own style and colour palette. In order to do this you will need to be inspired by your own source materials. You will need to bring with you any photographs, post cards, sketches or greetings cards with inspiring imagery. I would also encourage you to bring along your collections of fabrics and trimmings for that personal touch.

“Abigail is a very enthusiastic and very friendly teacher. She herself is very accomplished in the skill of machine embroidery and wants all her students to achieve and learn skills that they can be put into practice when back at home. She makes sure that everyone of her students gets individual attention and nothing is too much trouble to demonstrate or help with any of the techniques she herself uses to get a high standard of finish for her students. Anyone out there wanting to be creative should sign up now for one of her courses. Not only will you have a brill day but I guarantee you will return home rearing to put your new skills into practice!” Carol.
“I just wanted to say a BIG thank you for a most enjoyable day at your beginners freehand machine embroidery course. I thought you had the patience of a saint, with all the queries and questions I and the others ladies had all day long ! Nothing seemed to be to much trouble for you, whether it was a machine problem or a question about what to do next. I found you to be very warm, friendly and sincere in your desire to share with us all, the skills you have developed over many years and a joy to meet the artist behind the work.” Anne.
